I’ve decided to become a blogger now. An actual blogger as opposed to another voice on facebook on twitter. One of the things that people like about Experiment Haywire is that they get to know me as a person and that I’m not living in some ivory tower. It’s easy to get a hold of me.

Not everything that I say makes people happy but one thing I will never be is fake-to-appease-the-masses. I think it’s silly that I should have to “watch what I’m saying” online when I’ve worked this hard to establish my own company where I don’t need to follow social rules. Yet I must admit that posting so much personal information to my social networks (and posting about legal issues, music industry drama, etc.) was a pretty stupid move. It’s hard for me to realize the obvious sometimes but a few good friends confronted me and I didn’t lash out on them. Instead I decided to fix the problem. Confrontation doesn’t cause me to lash out. Being passive aggressive does. I have made a lot of mistakes and I would like to correct them.

I will still be talking to people on facebook on twitter through personal messages and I will still be making public posts. Many of them will lead here. This website is currently being redesigned and ever since LiveJournal I have seriously missed blogging. So here it begins. A new blog. Where I can have social rants, discuss my personal issues, post updates about my music, share lyrics, share feelings, and do whatever the hell I want without the limitation of 140 characters.

Hey all,

Thanks to all of you for the support over the past few years. Or maybe just the past few months. Or maybe from the beginning. People say that there is a rotating door and that no matter how many people leave there will always be new people to take their place. Yet some of you have been here with me from day one and that is something I will never forget. I want you guys to know I read all of your emails and only wish that I had the time to respond to everybody. I do what I can. I consider my long time fans to be my friends.

Yet some of you have been here with me from day one and that is something I will never forget. I want you guys to know I read all of your emails and only wish that I had the time to respond to everybody. I do what I can. I consider my long time fans to be my friends.

Anyone who asked for a free code for “Cooler Than Genocide” has been given one. If your code didn’t work please let me know. It’s through fighting against fascism that we can make the world of music a better place. I’m not just talking about the underground either. I’m talking about everywhere. There have been some recent changes in EH that I would like to mention. I guess the main thing is that I’m no longer considering my project industrial. I’m sure you guys have a bunch of questions so I’m going to try to answer everything now.

Will this effect your sound?

Not at all. I produce the music that I choose to and will continue to do so. While I’m currently in the process of finding a live band the sound of EH is not going to shift. My live shows will be more rock-oriented but the music on “Grrl Interrupted” will be pure electro. There’s a bit of breakcore too.

Will this effect your image?

My image is constantly changing.

So did the assholes win?

I don’t think so. I’m not switching genres because I was forced out. I was forced out ages ago. I’m switching genres because I want to be exposed to a wider group of people. I also feel that I’m a bit idealistic for the industrial subgenre in its current incarnation. When people tell me I’m the one who brought them into the scene I feel a mixed reaction. If industrial was full of people like me I never would have formed this project. Yet I don’t always need to be the odd one out. I’m sick of feeling like a hippie (not sure what else to call it) and want to be in a genre full of people who are more accepting of my personality. With rock anything and everything goes. There’s also the fact that I want more opportunities for gigs and genuinely miss rocking out. I started out fronting rock bands. I miss playing live with a full band.

Will industrial ever be a nicer place?

Not all genres want kindness forced upon them. I think we did a pretty good job though. RANT (Rivetheads Against Nazi Thugs) has almost 1000 members and will never die.

Will this effect machineKUNT?

Nope. There are several industrial bands on my label and I’m not going to tell them to change their genre. My personal affairs have nothing to do with my label. In the past few years machineKUNT grew from a tiny all-female record label to an international music and modeling agency full of alternative talent.

What are you currently working on?

“Sanity is Slavery” and “Grrl Interrupted.” It’s the same as it ever was. Nothing has really changed. This is simply a new beginning. Or a new ending. Take your pick.

Love,

Thanks to all of you for fighting with me in this struggle for truth and justice. Not just the industrial scene but all over the creative map. I think it’s time to start over and create a new revolution that is based on creativity, talent, innovation, eccentricity, thinking outside of the box, refusing to obey, and speaking out against injustice. The next time you see someone being attacked by a group of people do something. Don’t watch outside the club as someone gets assaulted for their skin color, sexual preference, ethnicity, piercings, tattoos, way of speaking, way of acting, or way of presenting themselves. Are these all not hate crimes in the end?

I recently heard something extremely disturbing that involved a bunch of high school kids participating in a gang rape of another student. Some of the kids went as far as to call their friends to join in. Others simply stood there and watched. Standing there and watching is one of the worst things we can do as human beings. When I was violently attacked at a powernoise show the other people stood there and watched. They know who they are and I wonder how they sleep at night.

Yet I see so much potential ahead of me to make new friends, meet new collaborators, and continue to take my music as far as I can. I hope that you guys enjoy the album.

The musical fight has begun. Raising awareness on forced institutionalization, stigma and abuse toward the mentally ill, the overmedication of artistic misfits, and a status quo definition of reality- the 2 CD digipack compilation entitled “Sanity is Slavery” will be released on machineKUNT Records in June 2010 and include a free digital bonus disc. 10% of proceeds will go to MindFreedom International, an organization dedicated to mental health rights and stopping psychiatric abuse.

It was first through Kim of Lady Parasyte (also on machineKUNT Records) that I heard about DJ T-1000. To be honest I was never huge into techno but when I heard Alan was one of the pioneers of the Detroit techno scene I had to check out his work. I was extremely impressed and found a love for this music I had previously not explored. The way Alan was doing things was different. I see him as someone to look up to ended up letting him use my vocals for “Vex.”

Synthetic Sensations is an online magazine focusing on technology, audio software, hardware, political activism, modeling, and electronic music. I was honored when they asked me if I wanted an interview. Featured in issue #2 you can download the entire thing here: Synthetic Sensations #2

Though of course if you are lazy you can just read the interview directly:

SS: Please tell me about yourself. What’s your background? Where are you based? How and what made you get into music?
RH: I’m Sweedish, Russian, German, and Jewish. Does that explain me? I’m still not sure! Currently I’m in a transient state because I’m homeless. Looking to change this so I can get back to finishing college. There have been a lot of bricks in the road recently but I’m not going to stop living because of these difficulties. I’ve gotta make the most out of my situation whatever it happens to be. I started taking piano lessons at a very early age and hated it because it was something I was forced into. From there I started fronting punk bands which lead to me creating noise music which lead me to picking up a few synthesizers which lead me to producing electronic music. Initially I was just a writer and street performer but I wanted to reach a wide audience and figured that music was the way to go.

SS: Please tell me about your experiences as a performer / musician. How hard has it been?
RH: When I was just starting out as an underground artist things were actually pretty easy. I was having a blast and doing everything I ever wanted to. It wasn’t until I started building a name for myself and “getting on the map” that things became difficult. I faced a lot of slander, harassment, stalking, and was actually the target of a hate campaign due to my Jewish ancestry. People felt that I “bought my way into the industry” and decided to come after me for this. I don’t understand why people think anyone who is Jewish has money though I certainly wish this was true for me! Looking back I was pretty naive and stupid but who wasn’t? I spun a lot of the negative press to my advantage but the damage was already done. I lost a lot of friends and collaborators due to being blacklisted from my own genre. In the end I learned who my real friends were but I never expected it to be middle school all over again. I just wanted to get my music out there. My demographic has now completely changed. Instead of reaching out to industrial types I started reaching out to other eccentric and “off kilter” types. I absolutely love my new fanbase. If you’re not an outsider you shouldn’t be listening to Experiment Haywire. I consider this entire experience to be a thinning out of the herd.
I’ve worked with some shitty producers who have tried to change my sound. Whenever I gave them my personal tracks they discarded them or completely changed them into material I couldn’t stand. Eventually I told these people to fuck off and turned Experiment Haywire back into a solo project. I am much happier this way. I actually wish I never worked with any outside producers. It’s a lesson to be learned. Experiment Haywire started as a solo project and it will end as a solo project.

SS: How hard has it been for you as a woman?
RH: I’m all about female empowerment as opposed to victimization but let’s just say that it was a bad idea to tell my fans and supporters that I was raped. Since a lot of my fans and supporters are survivors themselves I figured I’d go public and reach out to them. Yet this somehow got back to the nasty people who stomped me out of industrial and it became a huge internet joke. People were now threatening to gang rape me to remind me of the initial trauma. They were posting mutilated pictures of me with cocks on them and getting people to threaten me anonymously. In the end I realized they were a bunch of cowardly neanderthal thugs and I laughed it off. I actually feel that it’s a lot easier for me as a woman now than it was several years ago. As more and more female electronic artists pop up I realize that I’m not alone. We’ve built a pretty damn strong network for ourselves and are very supportive of each other.

SS: When did you start machineKUNT Records?
RH: 2007. It was after a controversial incident at a Providence noise festival. It was that show I was accused of “sneaking into” because I stood outside protesting the event after being called a “shitwhore cuntbag.” Suddenly it hit me. I was sick of the word “cunt” being used in a derogatory manner and I wanted to reclaim it. machineKUNT was now born though it was always an idea I had in the back of my mind. I just gave it a name. Females at the front. We were going to do things on our own terms now. This was going to be the new revolution.

SS: I love that the label is oriented towards female artists. How has this been received?
RH: Thank you. I’ve gotten a lot of mixed reactions. Everything from being called a feminzai to being told to “shut my stupid kunt up” to being told that I’d started something huge. A lot of other female artists have confided in me and asked me for their advice with their own musical projects. It seems like a lot of them have been through similar situations. I’m now encouraging all women to be their own producers and even to produce other artists. I’ve gotten a lot of press from various media outlets. The reactions are extremely polarized. Either you love machineKUNT or hate machineKUNT. There’s no in between.

SS: Has business been difficult what with people wanting to download MP3s for free?
RH: Of course it is. I think that’s pretty obvious. Yet what I’ve learned is that we need to create merchandise, throw live events, and encourage people to download our music through the proper legal channels. It’s not like anyone gets into running an independent record label to make money. I do this for the love of the art and the manifestation of my vision.

SS: What’s the plan for you and machineKUNT records?
RH: “Sanity is Slavery” is the latest compilation in the works. It’s all genders and genres. The compilation is about fighting against psychiatric abuse in the mental health system and we are donating 10% of proceeds to Mind Freedom International. This is a very important issue for me because I was locked up against my own will as a teenager for being “crazy” when I was really just reacting to the world. It amazed me that so many other musicians were interested in this compilation and that they had also been through absolute hell with the psychiatric industry. machineKUNT recently became a modeling agency. We’re the first of our type because we’re not an alternative porn site. The idea isn’t for our models to get naked but to express themselves creatively. There are so many alternative models with amazing ideas but since they aren’t willing to get naked for the camera it’s really hard for them to find work. We’re looking to change that. Eventually I’d like to combine everything together. Throw machineKUNT parties with live bands, DJ’s, models performing theatre, (if you’re a model you might as well be an actress too) and everything in between.

Tell us about about yourself and your band Experiment Haywire.
- “My name is Rachel and I’m a multimedia artist that you either love to hate or hate to love. Experiment Haywire started as an experimental noise project that was based on my spoken word rants as a street performer. Through the years it has changed into a studio produced electronic project that incorporates my punk vocals with my production of what I like to describe as dark and aggressive futurist anthems. I’ve played throughout the USA and would love to tour Europe some day.”

It’s pretty rare that girls release this kind of music, what are your thoughts about that and why did you start making this kind of music?
- “I don’t think it’s rare anymore though, it definitely used to be. The lack of woman releasing this kind of music was one of the reasons I started Experiment Haywire, machineKUNT Records, and the all-girl performance art group Nuclear Riot Party. I’ve always been about bringing more women into the industrial scene as the artists, musicians, and producers. I now feel like we’ve achieved this vision, but that there is even more to come.”

What are your influences, what inspires you to create?
- “My influences range from the bizarre thoughts in my head to any random interactions I may have with the universe or society. Musically I’ve always loved the dystopic sounds and themes of bands like Front 242 and Front Line Assembly and have wanted to bring forth political change through my music like Consolidated and The Dead Kennedy’s. Women like Lydia Lunch and Wendy O. Williams were huge inspirations to me too because they refused to back down no matter how difficult things got for them. I get inspired to create because I get bored and disgusted by the world around me. I need something to replace it with.”

When it comes to playing live do you have any special artist you would like to perform with on stage?
- “I think it would be amazing to perform with Emilie Autumn because I feel like we have a lot in common on a conceptual level. We have a similar message with our music. I’d also love to perform with Shirley Manson from Garbage because she was the first alternative female musician I really got into. I was 13. That was when I realized I wanted to be doing this.”

So what is the next step in Experiment Haywire, what are your plans?
- “The next step is to release my new album ‘Grrl Interrupted’. Technically it’s my first official full length because on ‘Annihilation Chic’ there were four remixes. ‘Grrl Interrupted’ is all new songs. I feel like this album tells the story of my life. I never knew that recording could become this personal. In the past I’d had reservations but with ‘Grrl Interrupted’ I let everything out.

What is the industrial/electro scene like in the USA. It seems the difference between USA and Europe is pretty big since we’ve had EBM and such for a long time and that is a fairly new concept in the USA right?
- “It’s pretty small over here compared to Europe. When I was at Wave Gotik Treffen in Germany it seemed like there were scene oriented magazines all over the newsstands. In the USA it’s a lot more spread out but everybody seems to know each other. We haven’t had EBM for that long out here but the bands that do it do it well. Combichrist and Aesthetic Perfection are both from the USA and have a huge following in Europe. The Terror EBM thing was pretty big out here but for a while and now seems to be evolving into something better.”

Any closing comments or anything you would like to add?
- “Get Nazi’s out of industrial. It’s not cool to be jacking off to Hitler because you were picked on in high school.”

Congrats to all the new artists who made it on here! I look forward to connecting with more of you in the future. It’s also a pleasure to be on a compilation full of so many artists who have inspired me throughout the years. As for the haters who are also on here I also wish them the best. It’s a new year and I have no wish to engage in juvenile battles with other artists. The only thing that matters is our music.

This was initially an interview for EH but the person conducting the interview told me he no longer wanted to be associated with me due to reasons which are too ridiculous to mention. Since he told me not to use his words I’ve decided to respect this. I’ve posted my responses to his questions in the form of a fact sheet. I hope this gives you guys some more insight into this project and the woman behind it.

Fact Sheet Haywire

-I’m up and down and all around. Life has been pretty damn difficult recently but if it wasn’t for the struggle I would lose my inspiration.

-The scene has nothing to do with the music. I could easily go into a rant about how messed up I think the scene is but what actually matters at the end of the day? The music. The art. Sometimes I’ll get sucked into “scene drama” but I always end up regretting it later. While I want new artists to know how bad the scene has treated me (so they don’t go through the same bullshit themselves) I am currently looking to focus on the more positive aspects of my life.

-I’m not sure if this would be considered goth but I like pretty much everything Alien Sex Fiend has released. I’m more of a deathrock person than a goth person. I guess my closest goth influence would be the Legendary Pink Dots. They’re one of my favorite bands of all time and their live shows are incredible. “The Island of Jewels” is one of my favorite albums. Would anyone consider Current 93 goth? “All The Pretty Little Horses” changed my life. “The Wall of Sacrifice” by Death in June is another favorite of mine. I’m not a fan of bands like Bauhaus and Christian Death. Goth, in general, bores me.

-”Tryanny For You” by Front 242 is one of my absolute favorites when it comes to EBM. “Front By Front” is a close runner up. “Tactical Neural Implant” and “Epitaph” by Front Line Assembly. Anything by Vomito Negro… as hard as their work is to find. “Too Dark Park” and “Last Rites” by Skinny Puppy. I really like this neo-old-school act called AD:keY. They’re like Nitzer Ebb but with a female vocalist. “Alles Is Gut” by D.A.F. is a classic. As for the newer EBM acts I think “A Violent Emotion” by Aesthetic Perfection set a new standard for the genre. I haven’t heard anything that good from this scene in a while.

-I’m constantly changing the way I write music. What I’ve been doing these days since I now have a very limited setup is composing on Abelton Live with my Oxygen 8 and headphones. I’ll start out by creating a beat, then a bassline, than a few synthlines, and then I’ll insert a bunch of random sounds until I feel like they’re in the right place. I love VST plug-in’s too. It’s all trial and error. I’m working on adding more structure to my songs because I’m sick of working with a side producer. I’m fine producing my music alone now- I just need to get better at the structure of the songs. I was raised on chaos so that’s a bit of a challenge but let’s bring it on!

-Right now I don’t have shit for gear. I once used to use a MicroKorg and Novation X-Station 25. Now I’m back to the very basics. I do still have my Boss ME-50 Multi-FX pedal that I use for vocal distortion. That thing is too much fun.

-It’s hard to choose a favorite instrument but I’m gonna go with the violin. The sound is nothing short of beautiful. I was working with an electric violinist for a while in Experiment Haywire but she was a bit shy about performing live. I miss her. As for synthesizers I like anything old and analog. I have a major fetish for Moog’s that were used in the late 70′s. There’s something about the sound of these analog synthesizers that is so raw and authentic. It’s not about holding down a key and letting it arpeggiate like people do with the newer synthesizers. With an analog synthesizer you are getting to the source of the signal itself and generating a completely new sound.

-I’m not sick of “mindless club music” as much as I’m sick of the idiots who continue to dance to it. The musicians wouldn’t be writing this crap if it wasn’t what sold. Don’t blame the musicians for trying to make a living you know? Blame the idiots for having brains the size of insects. Does anyone really expect this scene to have any intellectual meaning right now? Dirty Bois and Dirty Girls? Come on now. It’s a joke.

-If I could get any piece of gear for free I’d go with a top-of-the-line analog mixer that has self moving faders and more channels than I could count. Either that or the first MiniMoog ever created.

-I love collaborating with other musicians and producers. I do this all the time and am always up for working with new people.

-I used to DJ old school industrial, noise, digital hardcore, and martial neofolk at a club I was supposed to spin dark electro at. I can’t believe I lasted there for almost a year! Now I spin whatever I feel like. Depends on the night. I recently DJ’ed for the Psylcon Nine/Imperative Reaction show in Florida. I’ve been spinning a lot of Aïboforcen recently. Emilie Autumn to piss off the old school elitists. Frightdoll. I like to mix and match.

-I like a lot of movies. City of Lost Children goes on the top of my list. Blade Runner is up there too. 1984. Clueless. Anything Greg Araki did. (The Doom Generation being my favorite) The new David Lynch film Inland Empire was pretty damn good. I loved Terry Gilliam’s Tideland too though it was no Brazil. I could go on and on about movies. I loved Children of Men. Pan’s Labyrinth. Inglorious Bastards was hilarious. Party Monster. Tromeo and Juliet. A Clockwork Orange of course.

-I’m surprised people still read books. I only read twitter! I really enjoyed the book “We” by Yevgeny Zamyatin. It was written before 1984 and Brave New World and- as far as I know- the first dystopian novel by ever written. “The Metamorphosis” by Kafka. “The Stranger” by Camus. “No Exit” by Sartre. “Girl, Interrupted” by Susanna Kaysen. “The Long Hard Road Out of Hell” by Marilyn Manson. “Join My Cult” by James Curcio.

-I think the 9/11 truth movement is very important. While there are a lot of idiots who water down the movement with useless information and make us all seem like a bunch of conspiracy theorist whacko’s I find this to be a truly important time in history. People are finally waking up and questioning their government. It used to be that it was simply a few people discussing what was actually going on- but suddenly everybody is interested in the truth- and I find this to be pretty damn exciting.

-If I could go back and change history I would change the holocaust. Hitler killed the wrong people. If he would have actually read Nietzsche he would have understood that the lower race were the people who blindly obeyed their masters without question and that it had nothing to do with ethnicity. Then maybe we’d actually be living in our mutant utopia. Instead we have Idiocracy.

-The first show I remember going to (besides local acts) was KMFDM in Chicago at the Metro. 16 Volt was opening for them I was 17 at the time and still have no clue how I was able to get in there. It was a performance that completely blew me away. I remember seeing Survival Research Laboratories back in San Francisco. That was something else right there! It wasn’t just music but violent performance art. It was brilliant.

-I’m an anarcho-fascist. Anarcho-fascists hold their position to have removed all the pesky parts of old anarchism, in the sense that it can mean whatever an individual or group wants it to mean at any given moment to justify their claims, so long as those claims are identical to those of anarcho-fascists. Ok I’m kidding! I’m an anarchist. A liberal when my life is really shitty. I don’t know. I just want our civil liberties back. I recently founded RANT which stands for Rivetheads Against Nazi Thugs. We’re starting where the SHARP’s left off.

-My favorite EH song is probably “Sociopathic” because I made that song banging on scrap metal and recording it. It was the first time I’d combined the old school sound with the newer electronic sound. That song was done on pure improv. I just screamed into the mic and let it all out. I really like my new song “Reality Is Dead” too.

-The scene has embraced me with love and kindness. It’s hard to go to a club without receiving flowers! Someone once told me I was “making money off of sob stories.” This is the fucking goth scene. Who isn’t? At least my struggles are real and I’m willing to post about them. Very few people are willing to show this sort of vulnerability.

-I love old punk music especially The Plasmatics. Old punk is the true energy of industrial. I like everything from The Clash to The Exploited to The Dead Kennedys to The Transplants. I’ve also been getting into ska recently. The Aquabats are too much fun. There will always be a place in my heart for The Devothka’s too. They were an all female oi band based out of NYC.

-I consider myself a free thinker who has graduated the program people label as sanity. It’s quite a bore. People say that I’ve recently gone psychotic and paranoid. If they were me they would have gone a lot worse than psychotic and paranoid! I love exploring alternative realities. I consider myself “mentally sound” but feel that the things that have happened to me have been “utterly psychotic.”

Never be silenced,
